Cupcakes for Kit Kat

It is Kate’s 6th birthday this week.  As we have done the past 2 years, we are attempting to make her cake of choice (this year, cupcakes!)  2008 held a swimming pool cake… 2009 was a lollipop cake… and 2010 it’s DOLLY!  Dolly is Kate’s treasured keepsake.  Dolly goes everywhere that Kate goes, since she was tiny.  So Dolly has claimed the theme of this year’s party.

The goal:

  to make THIS…IMG_7761

…look like THIS!!IMG_7794

Step 1… a drawing and a plan of how to come up with it in FOOD.

Step 2…melt frosting, dip the cupcakes to give them a smooth look (like skin) as opposed to a frosted, rough finish.

Step 3…roll the edges in home-made pink sugar.  That will give the bonnet a different texture from the skin.

Step 4…color some frosting yellow and use a “grass” icing tip to make the little patch of blond hair

Step 5…the white, satin lace on the bonnet.  THIS is Kate’s favorite part of her dolly, so a VERY important part of the cupcake.  Since she was little, Kate fingers this white part of her dolly – it’s her calming technique.  To recreate, we used a flat tip and some plain, white vanilla icing to make that ruffled edge look around that sugared part of the cupcake.

Step 6…the facial detail.  I bought some flat, confetti type topping.  We used the blue ones for the eyes, and finished them with a touch of white icing to make the eyes POP.  The I cut the pink confetti in half to make the little pink smiles.  The nose is a piece of white sprinkle, and finally, a small round tip to make the boy at the bottom of the bonnet.

VOILA…DOLLY!!
